One has seen many prints\/digital copies, but until seeing the actual painting never appreciated how sad she looks. I\u2019d interpreted her expression as boredom, having to serve yet another punter, who\u2019s probably trying to chat her up. The Courthauld has a rough draft of Manet&#8217;s <em>Le D\u00e9jeuner sur l\u2019herbe<\/em> (1862). The finished painting is in Paris, at the Mus\u00e9e d&#8217;Orsay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.radegunde.com\/notebook\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/A9BF8BFB-989B-4EA0-A9EB-87C8016CEBF1.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Courthauld Gallery houses many other treasures, which you can peruse virtually (Impressionists are on the third floor): <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/courtauld.ac.uk\/gallery\/virtual-tours\/\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/courtauld.ac.uk\/gallery\/virtual-tours\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we came for the special exhibit (which you can also tour online):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Van Gogh self-portraits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The range of styles, techniques, and psychological revelation is fascinating. A few of his self-portraits follow.
